Observation Narrative
Habitat is the lowest portion of a massive (ca. 100 m. high) conglomerate sandstone cliff near summit of Cumberland Mountain, just east of Yellow Rock and 0.8 mi ENE of Cranks Gap. At least seasonal seepage over the rock face keeps this habitat moist for portions of the year. Bryophyte mats and small ledges protruding ca. 5 cm provide footholds for vascular species. An unknown black organic material was noted on a portion of the cliff face.
The following mosses and liverworts were collected and tentatively identified in the field (cover values listed parenthetically): Blasia sp.. (5), Dicranum sp. (3), liverwort sp. (3), cf. Mnium sp. 1 (2), cf. Mnium sp. 2 (2), Scapania sp. (5), thalloid liverwort sp. (5), Thuidium delicatulum (6).
